Sierra Subbetica natural park
Sierra Subbetica Natural Park (Parque Natural Sierra Subb├ętica), is located in the south east of the province of Cordoba on the banks of the River Guadalquivir at only an hour drive from Cordoba city. It comprises 31,568 hectares of exceptional scenic and ecological value.
The Park is part of the Beticas mountain range, with its attractive limestone formations. The beauty of the area, combined with the cultural merits of its villages, make this one of AndalusiaÔÇÖs most outstanding locations. A number of traces of prehistoric human activity are to be found here: Bronze Age idols, Iberian statues, a multitude of Roman remains - including a milestone thought to be the worldÔÇÖs first road sign! -, Arabic pottery, etc.
The towns and villages which lie within the boundaries of the Park are places of extreme beauty and their rich history and wealth of customs and traditions gives them a special flavour: Cabra, Carcabuey, Do├▒a Mencia, Iznajar, Priego de Cordoba, Rute, Luque and Zuheros.
Flora and fauna of the Sierra Subbetica
Typically Mediterranean vegetation, with holm oak woods, peonies and gorses, hawthorns, spurge flax, Centaurea castellana and gall oaks. The river banks are home to poplars, black poplars, willows, salt cedars, hawthorns, blackberries, Viburnum tinus, kermes oak, buckthorns, sarsaparilla, spurge flax and madronnoes. A number of endemic, Iberoafrican and local species such as the Echinospartum boissieri are also to be found, along with olive groves..
The Park is rich in fauna , its highlights being the goshawk, sparrowhawk, Hieraetus pennatus eagle, woodpigeon, wild boar and wild cat. Also to be found are rabbits, common kestrels, whitethroats etc. The sierras provide the most southerly habitat of the Cabrera shrew, not forgetting the river bat, kingfisher, aquatic blackbird, Natrix maura snake and stripe-necked terrapin. Birds of prey are the most common creatures of flight, particularly the golden eagle, tawny vulture and peregrine falcon, whose colony here is the most numerous in the province. Other species are the Monticola solitarius, the Monticola saxatilis, the alpine hedgesparrow and the crow. Mammals include the marten and the mountain goat. Small game species and cattle are also to be found.

The visitors' center of the Sierra Subbetica (Centro de Visitantes de Santa Rita), is located close to the village of Cabra, on the A340 towards Priego de Cordoba, km. 57.
